U.S. Government Extends TPS Deadline for Haitian Nationals

On Tuesday, May 17, the Department of Homeland Security extended “Temporary Protected Status” (TPS) through January 2013 for tens of thousands of Haitians living in the United States.
Haitian nationals who were granted TPS during the initial registration period must submit re-registration applications prior to August 22, 2011 in order to extend their status through January, 2013.  Additionally, Haitians who were unable to apply during the initial registration period are now eligible to apply for TPS if they can demonstrate continuous residence in the U.S. since January 12, 2011.  Among other benefits, TPS beneficiaries can work legally, obtain a driver’s license and attend a college or university.

The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County is currently assisting individuals with TPS applications. To be eligible, individuals must be able to prove that they are low income residents of Palm Beach County.
